2019 Highlights

Cancer Institute

The Northwell Health Cancer Institute establishes the Pancreatic Cancer Center in collaboration with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the Lustgarten Foundation, the largest funder of pancreatic cancer research. It also establishes New York State’s (NYS) first Center for Cancer, Pregnancy and Reproduction. Northwell Health treats more New Yorkers for cancer than any other health care provider.

Center for Emergency Medical Services (CEMS)

CEMS, the only ambulance agency in NYS to be dually accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) and the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch, transports a patient in one of its 150 ambulances every five minutes.

Center for Equity of Care

Northwell Health commits to TIME’S Up Healthcare to prevent sexual harassment and gender inequality in the workplace and protect those targeted by harassment and discrimination.

Center for Learning and Innovation (CLI)

Northwell Health and Fordham University sign a wide-ranging agreement to develop joint programs to train a new generation of health care professionals. As part of the agreement, CLI, Northwell Health’s in-house corporate university, and Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service will develop course content for the university’s Master of Social Work degree.

Central Sterilization Center

The Northwell Health central sterilization center, the largest facility for disinfecting and sterilizing medical instruments in the world, processes more than 22 million surgical instruments annually, providing service to nine hospitals and more than 100 physician practices.

Clinical Call Center

The Northwell Health Clinical Call Center (CCC), is an Accredited Center of Excellence for telephonic nurse triage. Operating 24 hours a day, seven days per week, the CCC fielded over 36,000 inbound calls in 2019. The CCC supports over 10 Northwell Health businesses and clinical service lines, including off-hours clinical support to 23 medicine service line (MSL) practices, with plans to expand support to a total of 53 MSL practices by the end of 2020.

Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell

All 95 fourth-year medical students who enter the 2019 Match secure prestigious residency positions in 17 different states and 21 specialty areas.

The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research (Feinstein Institutes)

The Feinstein Institutes, Northwell Health’s research division and the world’s scientific home for bioelectronic medicine, rank third in the nation in National Institutes for Health (NIH) grants per researcher. Its researchers are among the top one percent of all scientists in the nation. In addition, 26 Feinstein scientists rank among the most cited researchers in the world, including three in the top 1,000.

Gun Violence

Michael Dowling, Northwell Health’s president and CEO, issues a call to action on gun violence, calling it a public health crisis. In December, Northwell hosts a Gun Violence Prevention Summit in Manhattan, drawing representatives from more than 100 health systems and medical and health trade organizations across the country. As part of its response to gun violence, the Northwell Health Trauma Institute trains more than 3,000 individuals throughout the New York area in its Stop the Bleed program that teaches individuals how to control bleeding until help arrives.

Graduate Medical Education (GME)

Northwell Health is home to the third-largest GME program in the country, with more than 1,800 medical residents and fellows in 160 programs.

Health Solutions

The Northwell Health Care Management Organization, Health Solutions, provides administrative oversight, data analytics and clinical care coordination/case management services for Northwell Health’s value-based cohorts, its Medicaid Health Home, and for employees enrolled in its health plans. These activities span the organization’s entire footprint of 23 hospitals, seven post-acute facilities, and more than 600 outpatient practices and facilities.

Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies

Fifty-two advanced practice nurses graduate from the program in 2019, including nurses specializing in family nursing or adult gerontology acute care, plus those who earn advanced certificates in the school’s new family nurse practitioner and registered nurse first assistant program.


improveNorth, a new enterprise-wide patient safety reporting system designed to capture adverse events, incidents, near misses/ good catches and unsafe conditions, is launched in 2019.

Liver transplantation

The Sandra Atlas Bass Center for Liver Disease at North Shore University Hospital performed Long Island’s first liver transplant in December 2019. Of the more than 10,000 patients currently awaiting an organ transplant across New York State — including 1,100 in need of a liver — nearly half reside in the Northwell Health catchment area.

Recognized as one of the nation’s top organizations for military veterans, Northwell Health provides both professional opportunity and specialized care to service members and their families.

Northwell Health Physician Partners

Physician Partners introduces Podcasts to enhance communication about patient safety among the many ambulatory practices.

Northwell Holdings and Ventures

Northwell Holdings and Ventures (formerly Northwell Ventures) provides clinicians, researchers and employees an opportunity to commercialize their ideas for health care innovation and improved medical care.

Northwell Laboratories

Northwell Health opens a 101,000 square foot Core Lab featuring North America’s largest Roche Diagnostics automated testing line. The project is part of the Clinical Laboratory of New York (CLNY) Alliance formed by Northwell Health and NYC Health + Hospitals to integrate laboratory services. The new lab facility is capable of processing 5,000 tubes per hour and 55 million annually.

Perinatal services

Nearly 40,000 babies are delivered annually at Northwell Health hospitals — accounting for 17 percent of all births in New York State and one percent nationally.

Social Determinants of Health

Food as Health, the first hospital-based initiative in New York State to comprehensively address food insecurity among patients, is extended beyond the pilot site to other Northwell Health hospitals in 2019. It is one of many Northwell Health programs that focus on social determinants of health.

Strategic Alliances and Partnerships

Northwell Health collaborates on clinical, research and educational initiatives through strategic alliances and partnerships with CASA Columbia, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Epworth HealthCare, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Karolinska Institutet, Rothman Institute, University of Notre Dame and Western Connecticut Health Network. Affiliate hospitals include Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Crouse Health and Maimonides Medical Center. In 2019, CareMount Medical, a physician-owned, multi-specialty medical practice with 45 locations throughout the Hudson Valley and Manhattan, became a health system affiliate.
